Interesting Facts about Solar System


  • The sun is only 150 million kilometers from the earth
  • The sun belongs to the Milky Way Galaxy.
  • In 1543, the polish astronomer Copernicus suggested that the Earth and planets move around the sun.
  • In 1609 the italian, Galileo, became the first astronomer to use a telescope.
  • Sun is so big that approximately 1,400,000 globes of size of the earth could fit inside it.
  • Venus is always covered by thick clouds of sulphuric acid.
  • The earth was born some 4,600 million years ago.
  • The moon takes about 27 days to complete the circle around the earth.
  • It is our view of the sunlight that falls on moon that changes the shape. When the side facing us is completely turned away from the sun, we cannot see the moon at all.When it is turned fully towards the sun, we can see a full moon.
  • The Equator is an imaginary line round the widest part of the earth. It divides the earth into two halves: the northern and southern hemisphere.
  • On 21st march it is the equinox. The sun shines directly over the equator and everywhere on earth there are 12 hrs of day and 12 hrs of night.
  • On 21st june the sun shines overhead at the tropic of cancer. In northern hemisphere it is summer and winter in the southern hemisphere.
