Mistaken Notions about animals

  • Bears kill their victims with a powerful swipe of their front paws. They do not give their enemies a 'bear hug'. Their arms are extremely strong and can strike lethal blows.
  • Some think that the Camels store water in their humps. It is not at all true. Camels humps are made of fat.
  • Ponies are a separate, smaller breed of horse. Grown ponies never reach the size of standard horses. Three pony breeds are shetland, Welsh and Highland.
  • Prairie Dogs are rodents and are closely related to squirrels. They were named for their 'barking' sound, which resembles a dog's bark.
  • A Spanish fly is actually a beetle. It is also called a 'blister beetle' because touching it causes burning pain and skin blisters.
